Simone Panteleit Kolumne Why is the flower called Pansy?

Simone Panteleit - Die Nacht in Berlin (May 2019).

The pansy is a popular violet plant, but why does it bear this name?

The pansy belongs to the family of violet family and owes its name to the arrangement of its five petals or their name. The bottom, big leaf is the stepmother. It covers two petals called "daughters". These in turn partially cover two more leaves - the stepdaughters. These must share a so-called "sepal" together, while the "daughters" each have their own and the "stepmother" even two. The pansy used to be called Ackerveilchen, Muttergottes-Schuh, Mädchenaugen, Gedenkemein, Schöngesicht, Liebesgesichtli, freisam, free krut or trinity blümlin.
